WHAT IS THE FOUNDATIONS ACADEMY?
This class is for kids who are brand new to basketball or still working on building their confidence. Most athletes are between the ages of 7-10, but placement isn't strictly based on age-we look at each child's skill level, physical development, and maturity to make sure they're in the right group. It's a great fit for kids who want to learn the game the right way, without pressure, and have fun doing it.
We focus on core basketball skills in a way that's simple, fun, and easy to understand. They'll learn how to dribble both hands while moving in different directions. We work on proper shooting form using one hand, so they build the right mechanics early on. We teach layups and floaters with both hands to build comfort around the basket. Passing fundamentals are covered with both stationary and moving targets-chest passes, bounce passes, and overheads. Kids also learn the basics of basketball IQ-what a foul is, how to avoid traveling or double dribbling, and when to cut or screen. And on defense, they'll be taught how to slide their feet, stay in front of their man, and close out with a hand up.
Foundations Academy runs every Saturday from 12:00 to 1:30 PM at our Pro Standard gym. Each session includes around 20-30 minutes of skill work, followed by 30-40 minutes of structured 3-on-3 play using smaller hoops and basketballs.
WHY DOES THIS MATTER?
Because kids need space to be kids. We believe the best learning happens when the structure is there-but not so strict that it takes away the fun. The fun of basketball can be taken away so quickly in today's world. This is here to preserve that as long as possible.
Our sessions are guided, not rigid. Yes, we teach real skills, but we also let kids explore, make mistakes, and figure things out. That's where growth happens-not by getting it perfect, but by learning how to adjust when things go wrong.
Basketball teaches resilience, and we want every kid in this class to learn how to bounce back, try again, and build confidence through the process. We're not here to rush anyone or push them too hard too fast-we're here to help them fall in love with the game, find their rhythm, and develop at their own pace.
If they leave each session smiling, sweaty, and a little better than they were when they walked in, that's a win.
